The informal annual motor event draws hundreds of onlookers and participants who show off their cars or cruise a long stretch of Kirkwood Highway. An increase in police presence and law enforcement has reduced the drag racing and stunt driving that had marked previous events.
San Diego, California – Over two dozen motorcyclists had their vehicles confiscated after performing dangerous stunts and blocking traffic on two San Diego freeways Saturday morning, authorities reported.
The incident began around 8 a.m. when a group of riders entered northbound Interstate 805 at Imperial Avenue in Lincoln Park. According to the California Highway Patrol (CHP), the motorcyclists engaged in reckless riding and stunts, causing significant traffic delays for approximately 24 miles.
“The riders started performing stunts and driving recklessly, slowing traffic,” said CHP public-affairs Officer Hunter Gerber.
The group then transitioned onto Interstate 5, continuing their disruptive behavior until they exited at Via De La Valle in Solana Beach around 8:30 a. CHP officers intervened, directing the riders into a nearby parking lot.
There, officers detained 30 individuals, issuing misdemeanor citations and impounding their motorcycles.
“The CHP remains committed to protecting the community and ensuring California’s roads are safe,” stated CHP Capt. Brad Palmer. “Reckless driving and street racing endanger everyone, and CHP will continue to take enforcement action against anyone who jeopardizes motorist safety.”
