San Diego, California – A dramatic rescue operation at the South Mission Beach jetty Friday night left four lifeguards injured after they rushed to aid a man and woman who had been swept off the rocks by powerful waves.
According to Lifeguard Lt. Rick Romero of San Diego Fire Rescue, a guard at the South Mission Tower spotted the pair being knocked off their feet around 6:30 p.m. The man and woman had ventured to the end of the jetty to watch the surf when an incoming wave caught them off guard, slamming them against the rocks.
“They walked out there to hang out and watch the surf, and, obviously, the surf comes in and surprised them,” Romero said. “They got knocked off their feet and suffered injuries by getting hit by the rocks, getting slammed on the jetty.”
After losing sight of the two individuals, the lifeguard on duty quickly called for reinforcements. Rescuers responded via boat, jet ski, and on foot, eventually locating both victims and beginning the extraction process.
The woman was found in critical condition and unconscious, prompting lifeguards to call for a helicopter airlift. She was transported to the department’s headquarters landing zone, where paramedics were waiting to provide emergency medical care.
While returning from the scene, four lifeguards walking back along the jetty were struck by waves and sustained injuries. In total, six people—including the original two victims—were transported to local hospitals for treatment.
Romero described the dangerous conditions at the time, with strong winds and waves reaching heights of eight feet or more.
“We had really high surf: 8-plus foot on the jetty,” he said. “It’s very treacherous. A lot of wind, and we’re just making sure our staff members get all the treatment right now.”
Fortunately, the injuries sustained by the lifeguards were minor, consisting mostly of cuts and abrasions.
Romero urged the public to exercise caution in rough surf conditions, advising that if rocks appear wet, people should keep their distance.
